Chance the Rapper turned downtown Phoenix into a soul-stirring celebration on October 14th, bringing his And We Back Tour to the Arizona Financial Theatre for a show that blended faith, protest, and Chicago pride in equal measure.
Opening with “Star Side Intro” and “Ride,” Chance eased the crowd into a reflective groove before lifting the energy with “Pretty” and “All Night.” Just minutes into the set, the crowd was already in a state of frenzy, filled with the same warmth and excitement that radiated off the stage and throughout the theatre. His set pulled heavily from his newest album Star Line, showcasing an artist rooted in gratitude but still hungry to evolve.
Midway through the show, Chance wove a powerful narrative of grief and hope in songs like “Burn Ya Block,” “Drapetomania,” and “Summer Friends.” The first two carried a sharp political edge, his large LCD screen backdrop flashing “F*ck ICE” and cycling through real headlines that condemned federal overreach currently taking place in Chicago. It was a clear reminder that for Chance, music remains a form of activism. And above this, that the people of Chicago are deeply familiar with the beauty that their community holds, in spite of the way the city is depicted.
By the time the crowd reached the latter portion of the set, the cathartic tone of the night felt like a spiritual release for everyone present. Closing with “Speed of Love,” Chance stood smiling beneath soft lights as fans sang back every word. It was a fitting end to a set rooted in authenticity, nostalgia, and unshakable faith in the power that people have when they choose to come together with the best intentions in mind.
