Returning for a second sold-out show in as many nights, Wet Leg hit the stage running at the Fox Theater in Oakland for an evening of unapologetically intimate indie rock. From the opening song, “catch these fists”, the band worked to hypnotize the audience. Frontwoman’s Rhian Teasdale’s mantra-like refrains and translucent green guitar combined with epileptic strobe lights were plenty to send those paying attention into a trance. For all its comfort, though, their set packed a punch. Sharing the spotlight with Teasdale’s energetic stage presence were Hester Chamber’s twangy lead guitar hooks that microdosed adrenaline into the crowd, and halfway through the night, Teasdale invited the audience to join in practicing her “longest and loudest scream” in the track “Ur Mum”. Rounding out the night with their newly released album’s opener “CPR”, Wet Leg sent fans home with the same energy they’d sustained for the whole show.
Unvarnished art rock trio mary in the junkyard preceded the night’s headliner with a mellow but vulnerable set that led the audience to their groove and kept them there. Layering woven picked riffs over chords with just enough dissonance to tickle the ear, they were a natural companion act to Wet Leg and shone while contributing to the evening’s tonal consistency.
