Eminem has dropped a new single titled “Tobey,” featuring fellow Detroit rappers Big Sean and BabyTron, as the second track from his upcoming album “The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce)”. The song, released on July 2, 2024, showcases a collaboration between the veteran rapper and two generations of Detroit hip-hop talent
“Tobey” opens with a clever nod to the Spider-Man franchise, referencing Tobey Maguire and playfully substituting a goat for a spider in the lyrics. The track features a minimalist beat produced by a team including Car!ton, Cole Bennett, Daniyel, John Nocito, marvy ayy, and Eminem himself.
BabyTron, making his debut collaboration with Eminem, kicks off the song with a chorus filled with pop culture references and Detroit-specific nods. Big Sean, who has previously worked with Eminem on tracks like “No Favors” and “Friday Night Cypher,” delivers a charged verse asserting his position in the rap world.
Eminem’s verse addresses his legendary status in hip-hop, touching on his journey from an aspiring rapper to an icon. He also confronts criticisms and controversies, including a recent dispute with hip-hop pioneer Melle Mel.
The single’s release was accompanied by cover art inspired by a Spider-Man meme, further playing into the song’s title. Fans can look forward to the music video for “Tobey,” directed by Cole Bennett, which is set to drop on July 5, 2024.
“The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce)” is scheduled for release on July 12, 2024, marking Eminem’s first full-length album since 2020’s “Music to Be Murdered By”.With “Tobey,” Eminem continues to demonstrate his ability to collaborate with both established and emerging artists while maintaining his signature lyrical prowess.
