Kehlani, Oakland-born singer-songwriter, has just dropped her highly anticipated new single, “Next 2 U,” and it’s already setting the airwaves ablaze.

“Next 2 U” is a bold statement in support of Palestine, as evidenced by the music video released on June 1, 2024. The video features Kehlani and a troupe of dancers wearing keffiyehs and performing in front of Palestinian flags. It opens with a quote from Palestinian poet Hala Alyan and concludes with a message honoring the children killed in Gaza by Israeli forces.

The lyrics, originally about a lover, take on new meaning as a declaration of defense for Palestine: “They gon’ have to come get me / They gon’ have to see about me / to get next to you.” The keffiyeh-print merchandise for the single was designed by Palestinian artist Simsim and printed in Bethlehem by a family-owned workshop.

Kehlani’s unapologetic stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict through “Next 2 U” is significant, as many musicians have remained silent on the issue.
